Mercy Corps Azerbaijan has been invited to participate in the 3rd International
Annual Seminar on Business Development Services (BDS). The seminar will take
place in Turin, Italy from September 9-13, 2002. The theme will be "Developing
Commercial Markets for BDS". The main objective of the seminar is to inform
participants on cutting-edge initiatives, materials and analysis in the field
of BDS. The Seminar will bring together officials, policy-makers, advisers,
project managers and senior staff of national and international organizations
dealing with enterprise development from all over the world.
The seminar will assist BDS practitioners from different countries to build
on the experiences accumulated around the world, learn how to stimulate both
demand and supply in creative and effective ways, find new niches, to offer
attractive and affordable services in sustainable ways, within an environment
which is increasingly competitive. It will include presentations, group discussions
and questions and answers sessions. At the seminar Mercy Corps Azerbaijan representatives
Kamran Abdullayev and Catherine Rothenberger will give a presentation titled
"Facilitating Local Providers in A Humanitarian Context: Experiences of
Mercy Corps in Azerbaijan". More detailed information about the Seminar

Mercy Corps launched its operations in Azerbaijan in early 1997 with a shelter
program for refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Since January
1998 Mercy Corps is the umbrella grant manager for the six-year $45 million
Azerbaijan Humanitarian Assistance Program (AHAP). AHAP is designed to facilitate
programs that have provided health care, shelter, economic opportunities and
community development to IDPs and conflict affected people in Azerbaijan. AHAP
Economic Opportunities projects target to increase availability of credit and
business development services which range from group and individual loans to
business and agriculture trainings. In 2001 Mercy Corps received a grant from
USAID, the first awarded in Azerbaijan, for the Child Survival program in Masalli,
Yardimli and Lerik.
