Repatriation under the auspices of the ICRC
Today, 12 September, 2001, upon the request of the authorities concerned, the
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has assisted in the repatriation
of two Azerbaijani nationals, a military serviceman and a civilian, from Armenia
to Azerbaijan. Before their hand-over, both persons confirmed to the ICRC delegates
their willingness to be repatriated to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The repatriation took place in the Gazakh region, with the full cooperation
of the Azerbaijani and Armenian authorities.
The ICRC, in conformity with its mandate, has assisted the authorities in organizing
repatriations in the region since 1992 and stands ready to provide further support
to any such operation.
