Earthquake in Azerbaijan

Whenever disaster strikes we have to identify the most affected and bring assistance immediately' says Zlatco Kovach, the International Federation's Camp Supervisor. The Federation team, led by Zlatco, was quickly sent to assess the needs when an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook the districts of Lenkoran, Lerik, Astara, Yardimli, Masalli and Jalilabad on the 9th of July. The earthquake left some 800 houses completely damaged.

'It was about 7:30 PM when I felt an earth tremor that caused a great hole in the front wall. The other walls are cracked so that is very hazardous to live in' says Mrs. Aliyeva Vagya, 72. Vagya's family of ten is living outside the house in Balaband village of Lerik district like other 37 families, who lost their homes.

After a two-day assessment the district of Lerik was identified to be affected more and prompt actions undertaken. Supported by the International Federation the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society commenced the relief operation distributing blankets and plastic sheets to people. In all, 1165 blankets and 63 rolls of plastic sheet were released to be distributed to affected families. It should be noted that 45 rolls of plastic sheet were generously donated by MSF Holland.

So far the Azeri Red Crescent has distributed some 160 sets, which include one plastic sheet and two blankets per person and it is ready to bring more succor if needed.
