KOSOVO CONFLICT : MORE DETAINEES LOCATED... MORE FAMILY LINKS RE-ESTABLISHED !
The ICRC has received from the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Serbia the names
and location of a total of 2,095 persons held in places of detention in Serbia in relation
to the conflict in Kosovo. This includes 166 persons who were released on 25 June and
returned to their homes in Kosovo under the auspices of the ICRC
These notifications, which are a major contribution towards alleviating the anguish of
families seeking to establish the whereabouts of a missing relative, have been provided to
the ICRC following several meetings with the Ministry of Justice. Based on the information
received, the delegates of the ICRC has already visited 331 detainees held in different
parts of Serbia.
In the meantime, the ICRC has enabled more than 300 families in Kosovo to contact their
loved ones. Those contacts are possible through the free disposal of satellite mobile
phones, giving the people the chance to contact relatives, who are abroad or in other
parts of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. For the moment, the phones are being taken
all over the province's territory to reach as many people as possible. "The chance to
make a phone call meets a very human need to let your loved ones know you are safe"
says Edith Baeriswyl, head of the sub-delegation in Kosovo.
RUSSIAN FEDERATION: ICRC DELEGATE RELEASED
The International Committee of the Red Cross is very pleased to announce the release on
20 July 1999 of its delegate Geraldo Cruz Ribeiro, a New Zealander who had been detained
in the northern Caucasus region since 15 May this year.
Mr Cruz Ribeiro arrived at Moscow Tchkalovski military airport at 12:30 p.m. local time
and was handed over to the ICRC by the Interior Ministry of the Russian Federation. He
appeared to be in good health.
The delegate was carrying out his duties when he was abducted in Nalchik, capital of
the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. A local employee who was seized at the same time was
freed within hours.
SOME GOOD TIMES FOR IDP KIDS
A summer IDP camp has been set up to create an oasis of happiness for 40 children
living in southern camps in Sabirabad. A similar camp was held last year. Those children
aged from 10 to 14 are making the most of the sea, cultural activities and lectures about
the International Movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the Sanatorium
of Zagoulba. "Children are always the most vulnerable in conflict situations. It's
very important to give them the opportunity to realize and live their childhood like other
children. In Zagoulba, they will have the chance to play with other kids spending their
holidays there" underlines Philippe Golay, dissemination delegate in Baku. This camp
is organized in the framework of the "Migration" programme of the National
Society of the Azeri Red Crescent and is financed by the International Federation of the
Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the ICRC.
