Vacancy: Remote sensing/Geographic information system specialists 

Project duration: International expert (1.5 person month), national expert (2 person month)

Requirements:

 

• A university degree or relevant qualification in geographic information system and remote sensing or a related field;

• At least 7 years of work experience in using remote sensing and satellite images to measure water resources availability, irrigation system performance, and water and crop productivity;

• For the international specialist, prior experience with ADB activities is preferred as is experience in Central and West Asian countries;

 

 

Specifically, the specialist will:

1. collect all relevant datasets for water resources availability, water use, irrigation system performance based on remote sensing and satellite images, open access and globally available date sets;
2. collect all relevant and available ground measurements from local organizations and perform validation of the water accountability and system performance results from remote sensing;
3. a simplified yearly water balance is performed followed by a more detailed per-pixel assessment of water fluxes using a spatially distributed vertical water balance model developed for water accounting computations. This data-driven water balance model is used to calculate several hydrological components that are not directly measurable through remote-sensing techniques (e.g., surface runoff, water supply, and subsurface water storage);
4. develop geodatabase for the irrigation systems in NAR, including cropped area, crop water productivity, salinity level, irrigation system layout, location of water bodies and communities, institutional boundaries and other agreed features;
5. prepare maps (land uses, irrigation schemes and structures, administrative and hydraulic boundaries, crops, etc.) demonstrating the remote sensing results, and identify irrigation schemes that do not performing well;
6. analyze and recommend how the project can support a GIS and/or SCADA system for SWRMC to improve its irrigation management, include software, database design, management, maintenance, and data standards; and
7. undertake other tasks as deemed necessary by the team leader.
